Tonights NHL Picks- March 4 2014

We enjoyed another winner last night with the Blue Jackets defeating the Maple Leafs in our only play of the night. We add 2.18 units to the bankroll. We have two picks for tonight, as well as a system pick for members:

Ottawa Senators @ Edmonton Oilers: OVER 5.5 1.93

Two of the worst defenses in the NHL will clash tonight in Edmonton. The Oilers defense is currently ranked 29th overall with 3.26 goals against per game, while the Senators sit in the 28th place spot with 3.16 goals against per game. The Senators are coming off of a big victory against Vancouver (Heritage Classic) where the Senators were down 2-0 and came back with 4 unanswered goals to win the game. That game ended in a 6 goal total, which marked the 3rd game in a row for Ottawa to have gone over the total, with a total of 22 goals in 3 games, an average of 7.33 goals per game. The last four games for the Oilers have stayed under the total, but their opponents weren’t big offensive teams by any means. Each of the four teams (except the Rangers) are within the 6th worst offenses in the League (New Jersey, 24th, 2.39 G/G), (Minnesota, 26th, 2.36 G/G), (Calgary, 29th, 2.25 G/G) and finally New York was the leader in offense with 2.55 goals per game, ranked just 19th overall for scoring. The Boston Bruins met Edmonton on Feb.1st and pounded the Oilers with 41 shots, putting 4 goals on the board in a 4-0 shut-out of the Oilers. Once again, the game stayed under the total, but it isn’t a shock to anyone that the Oilers weren’t able to penetrate one of the best defenses in the NHL. The Senators may be brutal on defense but rank 12th overall on offense with 2.80 goals per game, and have scored 2.90 goals per game over their last 10 games. The Senators defense has allowed 4.00 goals against per game over their last 10 games, and have Craig Anderson listed as probable for this evening. Anderson is 20-12-8 on the season with a .908 SV% (30th) and a 3.06 GAA (40th). Ilya Bryzgalov is probable for the Oilers and has gone 5-8-5 this season with a 3.01 GAA and a .908 SV%. The goals should pile up in Edmonton tonight, we’ll take the over in this one.

Colorado Avalanche @ Chicago Blackhawks: AVALANCHE 2.55

A truly sensational price on Colorado tonight. This is a very important game for both clubs, as the Blackhawks are currently in the 2nd place spot in the Central Division (86 points, 62 GP) while the Avalanche are just one spot shy of the Blackhawks, in the 3rd place spot with 83 points, and 61 games played. The first place spot belongs to the St.Louis Blues (86 points, 60 GP) whom the Colorado Avalanche must face on March 8th. The Avalanche are doing great things on the offense, scoring at least 4 goals per game in each of their last 4 games (19 total goals, average of 4.75 goals per game) which works out to an average of 3.90 goals per game over their last 10 games. Numbers are down for the Blackhawks, as they have scored just 2.50 goals per game over their last 10 games, yet they (continue to) own the number 1 spot for scoring in the League with 3.36 G/G. The Avalanche rank 6th overall with 3.03 G/G. When it comes to defense, the Avalanche are ranked 15th overall allowing 2.64 goals per game, while the Blackhawks allow 2.55 GA/G, placing them 13th overall. It seems as though the Blackhawks have sacrificed their offense for better defense (2.50 G/G, 2.10 GA/G Last 10 games) while the Avalanche did quite the opposite, sacrificing some defense for offense (3.90 G/G, 3.00 GA/G Last 10 games). These two clubs have met three times this season, with the Avalanche winning 2 of 3 contests, which includes the most recent meeting, a 3-2 Colorado over-time victory on January 14th. No goaltenders have been confirmed thus far, however Semyon Varlamov is probable for Colorado with an impressive record of 30-11-5, a .925 SV% (6th) and a 2.48 GAA (18th). Corey Crawford is probable for the Blackhawks and has gone 23-10-10 this season. Crawford has a .918 SV% (12th) and a 2.31 GAA (12th). There’s great value here on the Avalanche at this price.
