Columbus Blue Jackets @ Washington Capitals: OVER 5.5 Goals 2.12
Risk: 2 Units | Win: 2.24 Units
The Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets will meet for the second time this season, again in Washington. The Capitals won the first meeting 4-2, which was the forth meeting in a row between these two clubs that has gone over the 5.5 goal total, dating back to November 12th, 2013. The Blue Jackets are playing good hockey right now, and have managed to throw together a four game winning streak, their biggest streak of the season to date. Columbus won both games of a home-and-home against Florida, and also beat the Lightning 3-1 over the weekend, then snuck past the Flyers by a score of 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday. The Capitals are also on a winning streak, as they have won three in a row, outscoring their opponents 11-5. Although the Blue Jackets have been finding wins recently they still need to drastically improve their defensive efforts as they are the third worst team in the League on defense allowing 3.30 goals against per game on average. Only two teams are worse, the Oilers (3.34 GA/GP) and the Stars (3.54 GA/GP). This struggling Columbus defense must try to contain the 10th overall Capitals offense tonight, they are scoring an average of 2.89 goals per game overall, 3.08 goals per game when playing at the Verizon Center, and have scored a combined 11 goals during their current three game win streak (an average of 3.66 goals per game). Sergei Bobrovsky is probable for the Blue Jackets tonight and is 9-8-1 on the season with a 2.72 GAA (30th) and a .917 SV% (18th). Braden Holtby will likely make the start for the Capitals tonight and has a record of 11-7-3 accompanied by a 2.37 GAA (13th) and a 21st overall .916 SV%. It’s interesting to note that the Capitals have the 4th worst penalty kill in the NHL at 76.2%, while the Blue Jackets are 25th overall on the penalty kill with a 76.3 PK%. Ironically, the Capitals have the 2nd best power play in the League at 28.8%, and note that over their last 10 games the Capitals have gone 36.8% on the powerplay, and 65.2% on the penalty kill. Both the Capitals and Blue Jackets have identical over/under records this season (13-13) and 7 of the past 10 meetings between these teams has gone over the total. We should see lots of scoring tonight between two clubs tonight. Take the generous odds on this one to go OVER 5.5 Goals, it will be the second time this season and the fifth game in a row between the Jackets and Capitals.
