January 6 2013 Expert NHL Picks

We gained a winner on the Penguins in regulation yesterday afternoon, in an intense game that resulted in 11 goals on the board with a 6-5 Penguins victory. The Ducks won their game against Vancouver, coming back from a deficit twice in that one, but unfortunately for us they could not wrap things up in 60 minutes making it a loss for us as we had the Ducks in regulation. We went 1-1 with our Free Picks yesterday, and have a nice underdog selection going for tonight:

Dallas Stars @ New York Islanders: STARS 2.04

Note: This line opened at 2.06, and almost immediately dropped to 2.04. It is now around 1.97 at most sports books.

The Dallas Stars lost their last outing against the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 5-1, despite taking 45 shots on goal while keeping the Red Wings to 27 shots. The Stars are now 20-14-7 on the season, and 11-8-2 on the road. The Stars have had one day to rest since their loss to Detroit, and are 9-3-1 on one day rest after a loss. Dallas has the 10th place offense that scores 2.85 goals per game overall, while the Islanders are scoring just 2.51 goals per game, which is 21st overall. The Islanders defense remains the 2nd worst in the NHL, allowing 3.26 goals against per game, while the Stars are allowing 2.93 goals against per game (23rd overall). The Dallas Stars are also doing a good job getting shots on goal, taking an average of 32.1 shots per game, 6th overall for shooting. When playing Away, the Stars have scored 2.90 goals per game, while allowing 3.14 goals against. The Islanders score just 2.45 goals per game when playing at Home, while allowing 2.86 goals against per game at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Dallas power play is converting only 12.5% of the time (2nd worst in the NHL), however they will face the worst penalty kill in the NHL tonight, which belongs to the Islanders with their 73.6 PK%. The Stars penalty kill is 17th overall at 81.3%, which has improved to 85.7% across their last 10 games. The Islanders Home penalty kill is still not very effective, at 76.9%. We will likely see Kari Lehtonen in goal for Dallas tonight. Keri has a record of 16-9-7, a 2.55 GAA (25th) and a .917 SV% (19th). Evgeni Nabokov is probable for New York, and has gone 9-8-5 this season and has a 2.86 GAA and a .905 SV%. The Stars can win hockey games when they want to, they have proven this several times over this season. We have seen the Stars beat LA (twice) in their last 10 games, and also victory over Vancouver, Colorado in their last 10. If the Stars don’t take this one lightly, they should be able to come out on top tonight. Tyler Seguin (point leader for the Stars with 41 points) has earned 6 points in 6 games, while Rich Peverly (19 points) has gained points in 3 straight games. Dallas needs to continue scoring goals but must tighten up their defense. The Stars do have the edge in this match and at a plus money price they provide great value for us. We’ll look for the Stars to defeat the Islanders in New York tonight.
