January 31st 2014 Expert NHL Picks

The Wild played a close game but suffered a tough 5-4 loss to the Avalanche last night, while our selection on the Pittsburgh/LA Under was a push on exactly 5 goals. We have one pick going for tonight. Note that most of the lines for other games have not come out yet, so there may be some added plays later on today.

New York Islanders @ New York Rangers: ISLANDERS 2.59

The Rangers may have squeezed past the Islanders 2-1 at Yankee stadium on Wednesday, but the Rangers are not worthy of the juice on them tonight against their state rivals. Firstly, both clubs met three times this season, with the Islanders coming out on top in two of those three contests, scoring 5 goals in each victory against the Rangers, while keeping the Rangers to just 3 goals in each game. The Islanders have lost four in a row, but take a look at those opponents. The Islanders faced three of the toughest teams in the NHL in just four days; Pittsburgh (4-6), St.Louis (4-3 SO), and Boston (3-6). It’s interesting to note that the Islanders actually out-shot Pittsburgh 32-29, matched Bostons shots at 37 each, and out-shot the Blues by one goal. The Islanders continue to put shots on goal, with 31 or more shots in each of their last 6 games, and an average of 34.1 shots on goal per game in each of their last 10 games. When it comes to scoring, the Islanders have the Rangers beat with 2.71 goals per game (16th) while the Rangers are scoring just 2.51 goals per game (19th). The Islanders score 2.75 goals per game when playing on the Road, while the Rangers are scoring a mere 2.43 goals per game when playing at Madison Square Garden. The Isles penalty kill has been successful 88.5% of the time over their last 10 games, which is a significant improvement over their overall penalty kill of 76.4%, currently ranked last in the NHL. The Rangers have been stopping just 77.8% of their opponents power plays successfully over their last 10 games, which is not good for the club as they have an 83.4 PK% overall . This game can go either way tonight, just as the game at Yankee Stadium could have on Wednesday. There is no value in taking the Rangers at a price of 1.57 in a fairly even match. As long as the Islanders can play some what of a defense, they have a great change at coming out on top against the Rangers tonight. We know the Islanders can score goals, they just need to work on stopping them from reaching their own net. There is value on the Islanders tonight and we will take them for 2 units.
