January 29th 2014 Expert NHL Picks

Not a good night for us last night as the Canadiens decided to actually show up for a game, snapping their four game losing streak, scoring more goals in one game than they have in their last three, while the Ducks received their 2nd Home loss in regulation time this season, against the Wild of all teams. I guess that’s the price we pay for our recent 3-0 weekend where we picked up over 8 units of profit. Moving onto today, there are 3 games on the board, and we have one pick going for the outdoor game:

New York Rangers @ New York Islanders: OVER 5.5 Goals 2.08

Here we are, the fourth outdoor game of the season. We are a perfect 2-0 on our outdoor selections this season, and will look to make it a perfect 3-0 tonight if this game can make it over the total. The Rangers will play their second game outdoors in just 3 days, after embarrassing the Devils 7-3 at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. This is the 3rd game this season between the Rangers and Islanders, with the Islanders coming out on top in both contests. Both meetings between these clubs resulted in a 5-3 Islanders victory. The Islanders have lost three in a row, and have had their last six games in a row go soaring over the total. The Islanders have the second worst defense in the NHL, allowing 3.29 goals against per game overall, and have allowed 3.50 GA/G over their last 10 games, and 16 goals against in their three game losing skid, an average of 5.33 goals against per game. Although the Islanders defense is lacking, their offense hasn’t been shy, as the Islanders have scored 3.10 goals per game over their last 10 games, and scored 10 goals in their last 3 games, an average of 3.33 goals per game. As we all know, the Rangers put a blistering 7 goals on the board in their last contest against New Jersey, and over their last 10 games they have scored the same amount of goals as the Islanders, an average of 3.10 goals per game. The Rangers penalty kill may be solid overall at 83.0% (11th), but over their last 10 games the Rangers have killed just 73.1% of their penalties successfully. The worst penalty kill in the NHL belongs to the Islanders with 76.2%, so the Rangers recent performance on the penalty kill is actually worse than the worst in the League. When it comes to goal tending, we have one confirmed goaltender, while the other is still up in the air. The Islanders have Evgeni Nabokov listed as probable for tonight. Nabokov is 9-8-5 on the season with a 2.85 GAA and a .905 SV%. The Rangers have confirmed Henrik Lundqvist, whom has a record of 18-18-3, accompanied by a 2.54 GAA and a .914 SV%. We are going to take this OVER for a plus-money price tonight as our only play, and with any luck we will see the goals will pile up tonight at Yankee Stadium.
