January 25th 2014 Expert NHL Picks

The Predators had the game in the bag last night as they secured a 4-2 lead against the Flames with less than half of the 3rd period remaining. Suddenly the Preds allowed the Flames to come right back with two goals, tying the game and sending it to over time, and then a shootout, where the Flames emerged victorious. It was a tough loss as the Predators had the game in the bag and gave it away. It’s Saturday and we’ve got two solid plays going and will look to pick up 4+ units tonight if both of our selections come through:

Buffalo Sabres @ Columbus Blue Jackets: OVER 5.5 2.11

The Buffalo Sabres have scored exactly 3 goals per game in each of their last 5 games, all of which went over the total; we have seen totals of 8, 7, 7, 7 and 7, with the Sabres allowing 30 or more shots in each one of those contests. The Columbus Blue Jackets are on a hot streak, as they have won a solid 8 games in a row, scoring 4 goals or more in 6 of those 8 wins. The Blue Jackets have had 7 of their last 10 games go over the total, and have scored an average of 3.70 goals per game in each of those games. The Sabres and Blue Jackets met one week ago today, with the game ending in a 7 goal total, a 4-3 Columbus victory. Since their meeting with Buffalo last Saturday, the Blue Jackets continue to impress, scoring 5 goals against LA (5-3 win) and 5 goals against Philadelphia (5-2 win). The Blue Jackets have taken 30 or more shots on goal four games in a row, while the Sabres continue to get pounded with shots, allowing an average of 33.9 shots against per game (29th overall). In their recent 5 game losing streak, the Sabres have allowed 21 goals against, for an average of 4.20 goals against per game, while the Blue Jackets have scored an average of 4.40 goals per game over their last 5 games. There is no reason the Columbus offense shouldn’t continue to impress tonight in Buffalo; we’ll take this over for a generous price and look for the goals to pile up tonight in Buffalo.

Anaheim Ducks @ LA Kings: DUCKS 2.00

We will gladly back the better team (best team in the NHL in fact, with 81 points) at an even money price tonight in the 2nd outdoor game of the season. We correctly predicted the Leafs to win the Winter Classic as underdogs, and we will look to pick another underdog winner tonight. The Ducks offense is remarkable, as they currently sit 3rd in the scoring department with 3.34 goals per game, and over their last 10 games the Ducks have scored an exceptional 3.70 goals per game, while allowing just 2.20 goals against per game. The Anaheim defense ranks 7th overall allowing 2.38 GA/G while the Kings still own the first place spot with 2.04 GA/G. The Kings may have the better defense but their offense is the 5th worst offense in the NHL scoring just 2.42 goals per game. The Kings have been scoring even less recently, putting just 2.20 goals per game on the board over their last 10 games, and managed to score just 1 goal against Anaheim on Thursday as they suffered a 1-2 loss to the Ducks. The struggling Kings have lost four games in a row, and were outscored 13-8 in those four losses. The Ducks power play has been astounding as of late, with a very impressive 35.7% success rate on the power play over their last 10 games, while the Kings have gone just 11.9% on the power play over their L10 games. This is not good news for LA as they are taking 12.2 penalty minutes per game, while the Ducks are more disciplined taking just 10.2 PIM/G. The Anaheim Ducks are the best team in the NHL right now with an impressive 81 points, the next closest team are the Blackhawks with 76 points, and have played 53 games, the same amount as the Ducks have. The Ducks are obviously the better team, the best in the NHL for that matter. To get them at an even money price provides exceptional value for us, and we will look for the Ducks to defeat the Kings for a second time this week, and will look for them to get in done outdoors at Dodger Stadium tonight.
