The 4th Place (Atlantic Division) Montreal Canadiens will meet the 4th Place (Metropolitan Division) New Jersey Devils tonight in Montreal. The Canadiens defense has been remarkable over their last 10 games, allowing only 1.70 goals against per game. The Canadiens have not allowed more than 2 goals in any of their last 10 games in regulation time, and “overall” the Habs defensive numbers are still great, allowing only 2.00 goals per game overall, which is 2nd best in the NHL right now. Boston leads the NHL in goals against with 1.96 goals against per game, the Canadiens are very close to this number. The Habs offense has not been shy either, scoring 2.67 goals per game overall, but over their last 10 games they have managed to score 2.80 goals per game (while allowing only 1.70 goals against), and when playing at Home the Canadiens are also scoring 2.80 goals per game. The Canadiens have also been very impressive on the power play, they currently have the 3rd best power play in the League that converts 24.0% of the time. The Habs penalty kill is not quite as good as the Devils overall, the Habs have an 85.3 PK% and the Devils are slightly ahead with a 87.6 PK%, but the Devils power play doesn’t come close to the Habs 3rd place power play. The Devils power play is 16th overall with a 18.1 PP%. The Devils really need to increase their shots, and goals. With more shots, comes more goals (You Miss 100% of the Shots you don’t take- Wayne Gretzky). The Devils are only taking 24.9 shots per game which is dead last in the NHL for shots, and they are scoring only 2.18 goals per game which is 26th overall or 5th worst for goals per game. Note that when the Devils play away they score fewer goals; 2.13 goals per game when playing Away. When it comes to goal tending, the Habs have the Devils covered. Peter Budaj has an incredible 1.63 GAA and a .939 SV%, and Carey Price has a 2.00 GAA and a .937 SV%. Price is probable for tonight, and Martin Brodeur is confirmed as tonight’s starter for the Devils. Marty has gone 7-6-2 this season and has a 2.20 GAA and a .910 SV%. We will look for the Canadiens to defeat the Devils at home tonight in Regulation time (60 minutes).
